Diary of a Greek Mum

It's not too long ago that I mentioned my thoughts about the different formats we can read books these days and how I prefer to read my literature, but it feels like ages since the last time I shared a book (or two in this case) with you.

For those of you who follow this blog but don't know me all too well, let me just tell you that I'm a massive fan of fantasy literature. And when it's done right, and in this case it has been, I get so excited I can't stop blabbering about it!

This is N.K. Jemisin's Dreamblood duology, "The Killing Moon" and "The Shadowed Sun"!

Spider webs, bats, witches, rats, pumpkins and scarecrows, it's finally Halloween! Time to pick your costumes, paint your faces and join the party, but hold your horses for a moment, aren't you forgetting something? Time to carve your pumpkin lantern (here's mine), only this year instead of throwing away its inside skin we'll make a sweet pie out of it.

So whaddaya say, will some sweet Halloween pumpkin pie treat satisfy your need to trick?

I remember when I was a child how magical I found it for a gooey mixture turning into a solid cake. How I waited for my mum to give me the spatula after she was done pouring the goo into the tin, so I can lick whatever was left on it because it was so delicious. And how I would stay in the kitchen and look at the oven, waiting for the moment the cake would rise above the tin, like a mountain in its moment of birth. So it was only natural when the very first I wanted to learn how to make was a cake.

For those of you who out there who are reading my blog but haven't met with me in person I felt like introducing you to a very important someone in my life. Her name is Mocha and she is my "daughter". Well alright, she is a Tibetan terrier but that doesn't mean she can't be my daughter too!

You know how families have legacies that pass down from generation to generation? Well, in our family a very important legacy is cooking, but not just for the sake of filling your belly. It's a form of art, performed with care and much love. The dining table becomes a canvas and we feel a natural inclination to fill it, not just with colours but also with smells, tastes and mouth watering memories. I got to be the one out of the four women of my generation to happily pick up on that legacy, so whenever I'm given the chance (and the day off!) I'm always trying to make something special. It's one of those special Greek dishes I'm sharing here with you. Pastitsio.

This is going to be one long post.

There is a certain ritual I follow when I read a book.

First of all, I make some form of ambiance. Nothing can compare to the smell of a vanilla or cinnamon scented candle slowly burning away but when all else fails a simple candle does the trick adequately enough. Then I need a beverage, hot or cold depends on the time of the year, usually coffee if hot and tea if cold (the opposite happens rarely), with the occasional glass of wine here and there. The day when I'll spend hours reading and not get even a little bit hungry hasn't yet come, so snacks within reach are a must. Biscuits, preferably of the dunking kind, are frequent visitors, along with many different sorts of cakes and pastries (Such a sweet tooth!).

When everything is done, then I'm ready to dive into a sea of stories, characters, settings. In this particular case, I dove into The Ocean at the End of the Lane, by my most beloved author Neil Gaiman.

As beautiful and colourful life can be, there always come days when our world turns grey and miserable. They're the days we all dread yet need them to come, so we can appreciate what we have and what we've been given. In case you haven't guessed it so far, I'm talking of the days you lose a loved one.

There is nobody I know who would answer this simple question with a no and the ones that do are simply not my friends (no, seriously!). Do you want to know why I'm such a pizza lover? Then keep reading!
