Christmas and the Geeks - Part One

by - Monday, December 01, 2014

It is FINALLY that time of the year! December arrived and brought along decorations, lights, baubles, carols and lots of merriment, only this year I have an extra reason to be jolly! My sister will be visiting for the holidays! I am over the moon!

December is also the month of giving and receiving, something I personally adore (I want to believe I'm great at presents under the tree!) and it gets even better when I have to pick gifts for my geeky friends! If they are part of your life too and you always get stressed as to what to get for them, here is a compilation list of things that won't break your bank (some may bring it to its knees though, sorry!) but will put a smile on your beloved geek faces. Or, to be more exact, here is part one of it!

Gamers come in all shapes and ages, the hardest part is to get the game genre they prefer right, especially if you're not a gamer like them.

There are so many categories to choose from, but I feel like starting with the one I like the most. RPG! What? You don't know what RPG means? Sorry, I keep forgetting not everyone is a gamer around this part of the interweb. RPG means Role Playing Game and there are three titles that I know would make every RP gamer happy right now, Dragon Age: Inquisition & Assassin's Creed: Unity, which have already been released and Witcher III: Wild Hunt, which is in pre-order.

Of course RPG is not the only genre a gamer enjoys. There is Strategy too, but there is only one game I can think of right now, Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth. Everything else is either a bit older or hasn't been released yet, like Total War: Attila.

And then there are the FPS games, or First Person Shooters. They are highly famous and loved by many gamers, but unfortunately I'm not one of them, so I can't really suggest anything here, sorry!

I bet by now you've noticed that all the games I'm suggesting are PC ones. Well, that's the thing, I don't own any of the new consoles and if I'm honest, I've always enjoyed gaming on a PC more. Most of the games I've suggested so far you can find for consoles though, so don't worry.

Moving from electronic games, I wanted to suggest some of the best tabletops I've played in the last few years. Not all of them require a geeky background, but definitely a strong dose of humour!

One of them, the best in my opinion, is Cards Against Humanity. If you haven't played it or even heard about it yet, then you don't know what you've been missing! I can't stress it enough, this is the easiest and yet most hilarious game I've played in the last decade! There are two editions so far, one American and one British, both incredible.

Another amazing tabletop for friends and family alike is Bang! A sheriff, a deputy, a renegade and outlaws, all having their own agenda. Who's gonna kill who? Fast-paced once you get the hang of it (which may take a couple of slower games at the beginning) and thoroughly enjoyable!

And then there are the geekier ones, like the one and only Battlestar Galactica (can't you tell I love it?), Star Wars X-WingThe Hobbit Monopoly, Doctor Who Trivial Pursuit and many many more, but for them it's best if you have the story background knowledge before you play in order to enjoy to the fullest (although besides Trivial Pursuit, everything else can still be played by non geeks).

I could just go on and on, suggesting more games, but I think I'll wrap them up for now. Get it? *insert cheeky smile*  Part two will be more about books and novelty items, so if you are a gamer and you have a suggestion, then by all means let me know so I can include it!

Until next time,
